Active viscous damping system for control of MDOF structures

چکیده
The development and applications of a supplemental viscous damping device with active capacity are described. The system of the dampers de ned as active viscous damping system (AVDS) is presented herein. Structural control principles de ned here as active control theory (ACT) are used to obtain the control forces at each time step during an excitation. Control of the damping forces is possible due to a mechanical structure of the proposed AVDS and do not require the input of large power and energy. This system can be e ciently used to enhance the damping of a structure without adding in sti ness and strength. The added damping forces can be adjusted in a wide range. Its e ciency is demonstrated by a numerical simulation of a seven-storey building subjected to earthquakes. The simulation shows that the behaviour of the damped structure with the AVDS is signi cantly improved compared to that of an uncontrolled system. Moreover, the response is better than that of adding either passive viscous dampers or electrorheological damping devices. Copyright ? 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Parametric Non-Linear Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Frames with Supplemental Damping Systems
Abstract—This paper focuses on parametric analysis of reinforced concrete structures equipped with supplemental damping braces. Practitioners still luck sufficient data for current design of damper added structures and often reduce the real model to a pure damper braced structure even if this assumption is neither realistic nor conservative. In the present study, the damping brace is modelled a...

Recent studies demonstrate that flexible (compliant) structures are safer with respect to conventional stiff actuation systems [1-2] and are even capable of being more energy-efficient [3] or achieve better performances [4] if controlled properly. However, despite the proved benefits of compliance, the integration of actuators with passive fixed or variable stiffness within multi-DOF (MDOF) rob...
متن کاملEffect of Damping and Yielding on the Seismic Response of 3D Steel Buildings with PMRF
The effect of viscous damping and yielding, on the reduction of the seismic responses of steel buildings modeled as three-dimensional (3D) complex multidegree of freedom (MDOF) systems, is studied. The reduction produced by damping may be larger or smaller than that of yielding. This reduction can significantly vary from one structural idealization to another and is smaller for global than for ...
